One busy Week

Sunday 7, 2024

Today was an exciting day. I went to Six Flags for the first time ever! So in the morning, I woke up got ready, and met with the other interns at the lobby to catch the metro to Six Flags. Once we got off the metro, we had to hop on the bus to arrive and this was my first time riding on the bus as well. Once we got to the amusement park, we checked in and headed straight to the rides. Once lunch came around, we left the park to eat at Wendy's and Chipotle. Then we went back to the park and finished up riding all the rides. It was very fun!!

Today like every Monday I woke up and headed to the George Washington Center for CHCI programming. Today breakfast was provided by CHCI and right after breakfast, we moved on to the check-in activity. After concluding the check-in activity, we had our GW topic for the day which was “Media: Responsible Consumption & Useful Political Communication.” This topic was very informative because of how the news spread and news that sometimes may be false regarding the political party they fall more into. Also, that how our generation tends to see information in various ways such as on the internet or in social apps. We had lunch together once the presentation was over and had our CHCI leadership training where we were able to hear from CHCI staff in small groups. It was a great opportunity to ask questions and learn how they got to where they are today.

Today I got to work and attended the intern check-in that we have every morning at 9 AM. It’s been great getting to see other interns and how they are doing in their offices and the projects they are working on. After the check-in, I went and got for coffee with my colleagues and spoke about the E. Kika de la Garza event that was going on at the Whitten Patio. Later in the evening, I attended the Tri-Caucus Internship Reception where I met interns from the Asian Pacific American Institute for Congressional Studies (APAICS) and the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation. It was a great reception because we could be in a diversified environment and see people successfully pursuing their dreams in the medical, engineering, or political fields.

Like every morning, I attended the intern check-in and afterward I finished up making sure the certificates for the 1890 scholars were completed. I also attended the intern bagged luncheon where I was able to learn about the Peace Corps and how it can open a lot of doors and opportunities. The speakers for this luncheon were Thomas Badilla and Herminia Gomez who both were part of the Peace Corps. I was able to connect with Thomas to gather information to take back to my community to bring awareness about Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSI). A few hours later, OPPE scheduled a meeting to meet with staff from the United States Department of Education where we were able to hear about their roles and duties. There was an opportunity to meet with the staff in groups it was a great opportunity because at one point during the meeting we were asked to give our experiences of the education systems back in our hometowns.

Today I attended the intern check-in and right after we concluded the check-in everyone from the office headed downstairs to the Whitten patio to attend the E. Kika De La Garza Fellowship Program Recognition Ceremony. At this event, the other interns and I were able to listen to a few words from the United States Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack--it is always nice to hear about the things that revolve around the USDA. Later in the afternoon, HEP/CAMP interns working at the USDA were allowed to have a meeting with Secretary Tom Vilsack. We were able to ask him questions directly and listen to a brief story of his life.

Friday 12, 2024

Today I did not work from home because the other interns and I were invited to attend the NAAS lock-up at the USDA to experience how everything gets marketed. Before this, I attended the morning intern check-in, and breakfast was provided. Overall I had a great experience today.
